Japan Nanbu Tetsubin – Koizumi Nizaemon XI, Uma Arare Nabu Gata (南部形馬文)
With Original Wooden Presentation Box | Imperial Kettle Maker – Okamaya Koizumi Nizaemon

This exceptional Nanbu-style tetsubin, created by Koizumi Nizaemon XI, master of the prestigious Okamaya and eleventh-generation Imperial Kettle Maker, embodies the harmony of form, function, and cultural depth.

Crafted in the classic Nabu Gata (南部形) shape—broad at the base and gently tapering like Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji—this kettle offers a timeless silhouette beloved by seasoned tea connoisseurs and collectors alike.

The highlight of this piece lies in its motif: three galloping horses, elegantly cast onto the kettle’s body. These majestic horses are not merely decorative. They are based on the original artwork of one of the most renowned Japanese painters of the Edo period, capturing the dynamic spirit, freedom, and strength traditionally associated with horses in Japanese art and folklore. Their presence evokes motion, vitality, and poetic beauty—a rare sight on a functional vessel.

This shape is the?hallmark of Nanbu tetsubin, symbolising abundance and balance. This tactile finish complements the strength of the form and enhances grip and visual interest.

Forged in traditional cast iron, this kettle not only retains heat exceptionally well but also enhances the quality of water by enriching it with trace iron. It is particularly well-suited for brewing rich teas such as PuErh, roasted Wuyi rock tea, and aged oolongs, bringing out their full depth and mouthfeel.

As with all works from Koizumi Nizaemon’s workshop, this kettle comes with a hand-signed kiri-bako (Japanese paulownia wood box), certifying its authenticity and honouring the lineage of craftsmanship passed down for over 350 years.
