Japan Nanbu Satetsu Tetsubin – Koizumi Nizaemon XI, “Shioya Gata” (塩屋形)
With original signed wooden box | Made by 11th-generation Imperial Kettle Craftsman, Okamaya Koizumi Nizaemon
This exquisite Nanbu Satetsu Tetsubin, handcrafted by Koizumi Nizaemon, 11th-generation master of the distinguished御釜屋 (Okamaya) lineage, is a masterwork of form, tradition, and symbolism. The model is named “Shioya Gata” (塩屋形)—literally “salt-house form”—a homage to the small, conical salt huts traditionally found in rural Japan. Interestingly, its silhouette, broad at the base and gently tapering toward the top, also evokes the majesty of Mount Fuji, lending the piece a poetic and meditative presence.
What sets this kettle apart is its irregular flared base, resembling a flowing skirt or natural rock formation—imbued with the quiet asymmetry of wabi-sabi aesthetics. Each curve and contour is intentional, expressing both groundedness and movement. This particular model is available in your choice of two finishes:
Arare Gata (霰纹) – classic hailstone texture, symbolising abundance and rainfall.
Iwa-hada (岩肌) – rugged rock-like surface, evoking raw nature and timeless stone.
Crafted using satetsu (traditional Japanese sand iron), this kettle boasts a high iron purity and a softer, sweeter water profile when heated—ideal for brewing PuErh, aged oolongs, and high-roast teas. Satetsu is also used in Japanese swords, and in the hands of a master like Koizumi Nizaemon, it brings both strength and elegance to the finished work.
Koizumi’s studio is the only remaining imperial-appointed kettle maker with direct lineage, and every piece reflects over 400 years of inherited skill and spirit.
This kettle is presented in a signed kiri-bako (paulownia wood box), authenticating its provenance and preserving its craftsmanship for future generations.
